(or... Chinese who Pershing exploited that then settled in Texas)
Very recently I learned that, after the age of Chinese exclusion had begun, General Pershing recruited 427 Chinese refugees from Mexico to fight against Pancho Villa. In exchange for their services, Pershing granted these Chinese refugees asylum and they moved to Texas. Most settled in San Antonio but some moved elsewhere, including the state capitol of Austin. Esther Chung Martin, the former Asian American Community Archivist for the Austin History Center, interviewed the ancestors of some of Austin's first Chinese American families.
