At AERA in April 2016, I spent a couple hours away from the conference catching up with my childhood friend Alia. As we brunched Alia asked about my research, and I shared a few stories about Asian American history. She wanted to know more and suggested that I blog about all these stories that are left out of school textbooks and curriculum. Like me, she never learned about the Punjabi farmers who came to California in the early 1900s or the Filipino farmworkers who began the famous Delano grape strike in 1965 when she was in school. But she wanted to know! So I'm going to try to update my blog more frequently with bits of Asian American history and recommended readings - not necessarily all original content, but at least getting those stories out to anyone who is interested.
